Photography was once described as “Painting with Light”. Through the photography course at Sturgeon Heights, students will learn this fine art. Hands on practice, fun photo contests, photo outings and demonstrations as well as studying the history and other Photography related topics are included at all levels.

Sturgeon Heights Photography is where student can unleash their photographic creativity through the use of professional DSLR cameras and equipment. In this program, we start with the basics, covering proper composition and editing techniques. As the course progresses, students are shown more advanced techniques and equipment. Students get to use our fully equipped studio to produce professional results. They discover much more advanced editing techniques using Adobe Photoshop. Students are offered many chances to work with real clients and live events as well as field trips that encourage their photographic creativity. As students build their skills, they start to focus on developing their portfolios in preparation for post-secondary education or transition to employment.

We offer state of the art software such as Adobe Creative Cloud, the latest Canon DSLR cameras and equipment, Kodak and Xerox printing capabilities as well as a professional and fully equipped photo studio.

Grade 10

In the introductory stage of the course, students learn the basic operation of a digital camera. This includes how the camera works, the science behind digital and traditional photography as well as composition and editing techniques using Adobe Photoshop.

Grade 11

As students progress to the intermediate level of photography, they learn how to start using the more advanced features of their camera. Moving from point and shoot photos to learning how to use the manual features of their cameras. Students are supplied with a professional digital camera and lenses. Students use a fully equipped studio with professional equipment and studio props and backdrops. Photos are no longer just taken, they are composed. A deeper look at the digital darkroom using advanced editing techniques is also explored.

Grade 12

In the final year, at the advanced level of course students use DSLR camera to create portfolio masterpieces. Students work towards mastery of their Photography skills. Students explore advanced techniques, experimenting and proper photography workflow. Students are introduced to Adobe Lightroom for photo management. They study creative and advanced professional techniques of still and portrait photography. Students are encouraged to photograph real clients and live events in order to build experience. Heavy emphasis is placed on digital imaging and data management with each student producing a digital multimedia portfolio that showcases his/her best work. Students explore career paths in Photography and may be eligible for work experience.
